The West part of Iceland has in the past got less attention than the more recognized Golden Circle and the South Part of Iceland. If you however have more time than the 2-3 days to cover Golden Circle and the South we certainly can recommend Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes Peninsula as a destination within the destination Iceland 🙂
If you are driving yourself and want to visit Snæfellsnes Peninsula there are few sights that you need to visit such as Gerðuberg Cliffs, Arnarstapi and Hellnar, Lóndrangar, Vatnshellir for a caving tour, Dritvík and one of the most photographed mountain in Iceland, Kirkjufell. And let´s not forget the amazing Snæfellsjökull where you can do a Glacier Hike in the summer.
If you stop at Stykkishólmur there are also sea tours that we certainly can recommend, such as The Viking Sushi Adventure
If you are travelling in June and July do not miss Ytri-Tunga where you can often spot seals at the time.
If you would rather like to do this as an operated tour with a guide we can recommend The Snæfellsnes National Park tour
Borgarfjörðu area is, as well, very beautiful with it´s magnificent Hraunfossar / Barnafossar and Deilartunguhver, which is Europe´s most powerful hot spring (180 ltrs/sec of 100 degree celsius hot water) and of course the man-made icecave in Langjökull, Europe´s second largest glacier. If you are doing a self-drive tour make sure you book your admission to Into the Glacier here (departing from Husafell).
It is truely amazing to enter the man made Ice Cave and here are suggestions Into the Glacier Day Tour from Reykjavik or in a Into the Glacier Super-Jeep Tour if you like to do this as an operated tour departing from Reykjavik.
It is possible to do an overnight 2-day Tour for both Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes Peninsula, 2-day Northern Lights and Snæfellsnes Peninsula
